Hulk Central Smashdown - ReviewHulk Central Smashdown is a smooth, intuitive, good-looking flash game. It is unfortunate, then, that the actual gameplay lacks the addictive, satisfying feel that such Hulk games require for success. The Hulk is a recognizable arcade figure whose brawn and brute has been well-used for years of video games. Hulk Central Smashdown takes this well-known, awesome figure, and focuses on one ability--jumping. Now, the Hulk is an excellent jumper. But you'd think that something that enormously strong would have a few ways of dealing with tiny killer robots other than simply jumping really high and landing on them. The actual jumping charge-up feature is intuitive; the longer you hold down your click without the Hulk getting hit by a robot, the more widespread his havoc will wreak when he jumps and lands. You're incentivized to run your Hulk around, dodging tiny robots as you charge up his jump attack, waiting until the last second to leap and land with ultimate force for combos. The jump animation itself looks surprisingly realistic and well-done, considering that the player sees all of this from an eagle's eye view, a perspective that makes vertical differences notoriously difficult to render. Again, the graphics are not a problem for Hulk Central Smashdown. There are two main issues with the game. The first is the flavor, or feel of the experience. You command one of the strongest superheroes ever created, and his only way of dealing with tiny robots is to jump on them? No kicking or punching? Picking up a robot and throwing it at the others? But the Hulk's offensive repertoire is not the only flavor issue. The robots that hit the Hulk seem to deal incredible amounts of damage to such a powerful hero. A few mere scrapes and the Hulk is reduced to a human corpse on the asphalt. Hulk Central Smashdown's flavor problems would be easily forgiven if the actual gameplay were engrossing, rewarding, and repeatable. The presence of the Hulk would then be a sweet addition instead of a poorly-executed liability. Instead, Hulk Central Smashdown simply asks you to jump up and down a lot, all while avoiding small enemies that scramble on the ground. It sounds like Super Mario Brothers, except that Mario has extensive levels to travel through with jumping and timing puzzles to master, while Hulk Central Smashdown takes place on a single square of pavement for all eternity. Evading the scrambling robots is critical, as you need the time to charge up your jump ability. The task proves more difficult than you would think, as some robots will shoot difficult-to-avoid lasers, and you'll be forced to jump merely to avoid death. But when you land your smashing zone will be too small for a lack of powering up, and you'll be quickly surrounded and poked to death. The learning curve may be steep, but there is little satisfaction or reward in simply seeing the Hulk continually jump on little robots. The game does offer a High Score system so you can keep track of your progress in skill, but with many deeper, more engrossing flash games out there, Hulk Central Smashdown isn't likely to have a crowded ladder. |
